Zale was both a skin diver (scuba diver) and pioneer of scubadiving in the 1950s. In addition to diving, Zale was an early underwater equipment tester and aquatic specialist. She was featured on Sports Illustrated's cover in 1955. She became a scuba instructor later and started photographing underwater.

He chose to pursue an acting profession after graduating from University of California Irvine. He took acting lessons and began to appear in commercials and plays.
