Cousteau (a French national) developed the underwater breath apparatus in 1943. Captain Yves Le Prieur, a 1925 inventor, was his inspiration. The Aqua-Lung initially had limited functionality. Cousteau, who had advanced scuba technology, went on to discover underwater archeology. He led the first expedition to use self-contained diving equipment and recovered the Roman wreck Mahdia. He also converted a British mining vessel into an oceanographic research vessel by using a British minesweeper. He was unable to raise funds and his passion for diving led him to write The Silent World, which became an award-winning film.

In 1945, Emile Gagnan and Jacques Yves Cousteau patented their Aqua-Lung diving regulator. Aire Liquide (a French company) purchased the rights for the manufacture of the regulator. It was later sold by the U.S. Divers Corporation. It was the most recent development of the French CG45 regulation and was manufactured in Canada. This regulator was extremely successful.
The Aqua-lung was initially called the Aqua-lung and was first sold in France in 1946. Then, it was brought to the U.S. in 1952. In 1958, Air Liquide purchased U.S. The company was renamed Aqua Lung America after it acquired U.S. Divers. Emile Gaugnan and Jacques Cousteau were the two Frenchmen who invented Aqua-Lung. Both men were spies in the French Resistance during World War II. Robert Ballard maintained his love for the sea even after the war. Emile Gagnan became his partner in crime, and he was working at L'Air Liquide as a Frenchman. They learned high-pressure pneumatic design as engineers. Gagnan's original idea evolved into the Aqua-Lung, a fully-automated compressed air scuba system.
