What is an Aqua Lung?

What is an Aqua Lung? It is a self-contained open-circuit breathing apparatus. Aqua-Lungs was one of the first type of self-contained respiratory apparatus. It quickly gained commercial success and popularity around the world. This type of equipment has become known as a twin-hose diver regulator and a demand valve. Aqua-lungs were created by Emile Gagnen and Jacques Cousteau.

Jacques Cousteau

Jacques Cousteau developed the first self-contained open-circuit underwater respirator in the 1940s. His design was based on a demand valve system that supplied compressed air to divers during their underwater breathing. The Aqua-Lung was the name of this device. It opened up the world to all who were interested in diving. Aqua-Lung, designed by Cousteau, became the standard in diving.

Emile Gagnan

Emile Gagnan, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and Emile Gaunin invented the Aqua Lung in 1940. The Aqua Lung's unique design is a result of the designs of earlier diving helmets from the 19th century. It allows underwater divers the ability to breathe through a mouthpiece, which releases compressed oxygen activated by diver's breath. Gagnan further refined the regulator valve to allow for automatic air supply to the diver's lips. The amount of breath taken by the diver is then proportional to compressed air. This device was a breakthrough in the diving industry, allowing people to explore ocean depths for scientific observation, military use, and recreational purposes.

The first open-circuit demand regulator

The Aqua-Lung was developed by Cousteau in 1944. It was patented in 1946. The Aqua-Lung has been a favorite scuba regulator for many years. Gagnan was Cousteau’s father and Emile Gagnan was his French chemist colleague. They all knew Cousteau's research and decided to collaborate and create the Aqua-Lung regulator.
